Learning Outdoors

Outdoor learning is central to the curriculum at St. Joseph’s.

Children from Nursery to Year 6 benefit from our brand new Forest School Shelter, Nature Classroom and historic, riverside grounds.

The children will be given the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of activities using the natural resources available to them. Some (but not limited to) of the possible activities are listed below:

  • Plant and tree identification
  • Vegetable growing
  • Mini-beast identification
  • Shelter building
  • Using tools
  • Creating natural artwork
  • Coppicing
  • Woodland management
  • Fire lighting
  • Climbing
  • Outdoor games

Why Outdoors?

Outdoor learning has been in vogue for some time now, but one of the biggest surprises about St Joseph’s is that it is set on a larger estate in which the children can take advantage of ‘welly walks’, pond-dipping and a much-loved forest school.

The importance of fresh air and learning outdoors has been well documented.

Outdoor learning improves physical health, boosts cognitive development, increases concentration, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Children build resilience, self-confidence and a deeper connection with nature.
